Not in bloom, but I love the gorgeous leaves... P. wenshanense: concolor: bellatulum..? A Maudiae type, don't know what colour. Supposed to be Maudiae album but I don't think that's what it is.. Some seedlings: esquirolei: A few more: Got a few more hybrid seedlings, but green leaved types..

Great collection of paphs, Cheah! Btw, the paph on the fourth pic, I seem to have one of those too. Can't figure out what it is as I bought it as a rescue plant from one of the Sungai Buloh nurseries.

when it comes to paphs, i am only scared of one thing... spider mites. they are fast and thorough.. killing paphs quick and without warning. this used to be a very healthy 3-4 crown bella and this used to be a very healthy hybrid too - thankfully this was spotted early so i was able to save it and it is now doing okay but the main plant has died leaving two small new growths. (old pic) and the following two also kena attack, cannot save anymore... already jadi "black orchid" and long thrown away. oapm.proboards52.com/index.cgi?board=orchidhelp&action=display&thread=197

Hi, funkychips.. Oh, I see.. pdox, my main problem with paphs is not spider mites, but scales.. Scales seem to love them cos they're so juicy, and they camouflage very well on the undersides of species with purple-spotted leaves (brachys).. BTW, I think bellatulum is rather difficult to grow. I've killed 2 already, and the only one I have now is my supposed 'bellatulum' in the 3rd pic..

Hi, kit1212.. i get my paphs from all over the place, mostly from local orchid shows. If you're a beginner to paphs, I suggest you try easier species like callosum and niveum first (cost around Rm15-20 only for a flowering size plant). Liemianum and primulinum are also easy but more expensive as they are rarer. Some of the Taiwanese Maudiae hybrids also should be easy, but don't know if they will establish well to our climate (I have never tried them). Barbatum is a pain in the &*(#@ to grow and flower, so I don't suggest you try that. Light requirement as for phals. One tip: Never use straight sphagnum moss as a medium. It remains too wet for too long. Good luck!

Hi Kit, I use coconut husk chips, sphagnum moss, vermiculite and perlite for my plants. You can get these at flower nurseries or garden centers in DIY stores. Just ask around but the coconut husk chips is a bit more dificult to find. I bought mine in Sg Buloh nursery. Hope that helps.

Yeah, you can but provided your mix must have something that is reasonably coarse so to provide better aeration. Another good alternative is to mix crushed coral and bricks. By the way, my paph bloomed this morning. It looks like neither niveum or concolor but rather a mix of both. Could it be hybrid of the two? Can anyone help me ID it? TIA.

funkychips, noid but very nice. kit, I use chopped tree fern fibre for my plants, mixed with limestone. Seems to work well. I also have one in just bricks and charcoal and plant is very healthy and produced two new growths last year which quickly grew to the same size as the original plants. I have a few pots in just limestone rocks mixed with smaller pebbles and moss and another pot with limestone and natural humus I collected off forest floor. My experiece, paphs are relatively easy and hardy, just keep water off their crowns when they are in a stressed state (just re-potted or under mite attack etc) or they will suffer from crown rot. For fertilizers, I use seaweed and taik kambing sparingly.

My experiece, paphs are relatively easy and hardy.. Well, that's easy for you to say cos you live practically in their natural habitat... Not all of us can just go and collect jungle humus whenever we need any... ;D For what its worth, I think funkychip's paph is a straight niveum, just one with slightly wider leaves than usual.. pdox, I want your hookeraes... Meleleh air liur tengok...

Thanks for sharing pdox!! Jungle humus memang best giler. Dulu I selalu gi kutip kat FRIM , tapi sekarang cuma guna mix coral chips and the coco chips plus a bit of moss and charcoal. Your plants are really beautiful. I have never seen actual plant of hookerae before until now. I plan to get primulinum probably by next month ;D. funkychips, noid but very nice. kit, I use chopped tree fern fibre for my plants, mixed with limestone. Seems to work well.
